University of Newcastle
This new programme is offered by the International Centre for Music Studies (ICMUS) at Newcastle University. It addresses a wide range of aspects of teaching and learning music both in educational institutions and the wider community whilst enabling you to extend your musical expertise.
The scope of this programme enables you to develop your skills and knowledge in a number of different ways. You explore different music educational philosophies and issues concerning the teaching and learning of music in both informal and formal settings for different group sizes (class, group and one-to-one) at primary, secondary and tertiary levels and in the wider community. You also further explore some of the key debates in music education such as the tension between an inclusive music pedagogy and the fostering of musical excellence. You may also develop your musical expertise by choosing optional modules from those offered on the MA Music and MMus Music programmes. A unique feature of this programme is our partnership with the Music Education Master’s programme at Bergen University College and their newly-established research centre for arts, culture and communication. For the MA you take general and music education research training modules (30 credits); taught modules (90 credits); and write a dissertation (60) credits. For the Diploma you follow a similar programme but do not undertake a dissertation.

Normally an upper-second-class Honours degree or equivalent, in Music or Music Education. However, we may take other qualifications and experience into account. Applicants whose first language is not English require IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 600 (paper-based) or 250 (computer-based), or equivalent.
